ANNOUNCEMENT – “CAT IN THE HAT” SOCIAL MEDIA POSTS

Webster County Schools is seeing an increase in concerning social media posts commonly referred to as “Cat in the Hat” posts.

To clarify: When we refer to “Cat in the Hat” posts, we are not referring to the Dr. Seuss book or character itself. We are referring to a social media trend in which students use images, references, accounts, or posts involving the Cat in the Hat character in a way that is intended—or may be perceived—to intimidate, threaten, create fear, or suggest that something harmful may happen at a school or in the community.

Students may participate in this trend believing it is simply a joke. However, the context and perception of these posts can cause very real fear and concern. Any post that appears threatening or raises concerns about school safety must be taken seriously and may involve school administrators and law enforcement.

Parents and guardians, please talk with your students about the seriousness of creating, sharing, reposting, commenting on, or participating in these types of posts. Something intended as a joke online can quickly have serious real-world consequences. Also, please remind students to think before they post and to immediately report concerning social media activity to a trusted adult.
